Echocardiogram
is an ultrasound test that helps doctors to efficiently
diagnose a disease and follow up on the treatment
of coronary artery diseases, in particular congenital
heart diseases. This test requires no specific
preparation.
STRESS
ECHOCARDIOGRAM
This is the test performed along with echocardiogram
during exercise by comparing, before and
after exercise on a treadmill, the stress
on the heart as well as the movement of heart
wall so as to diagnose coronary artery diseases. |
To
prepare for the test
|
- Refrain from having a large meal or
alcohol 2-4 hours prior to the test.
- Ask your doctor if daily medication should
be stopped before the test.
- Prior to the test, each patient must
sign a consent form that gives his or her
permission to do the test.

DOBUTAMINE
STRESS ECHOCARDIOGRAM
This diagnostic procedure is used to assess
the conditions of heart and arteries by comparing
the stress on the heart before, during and
after dobutamine is applied. It is appropriate
in the case where exercise on a treadmill
is impossible due to age and physical restrictions. |
To
prepare for the test
|
- Avoid eating and drinking 4-6 hours
before the test

Transesophageal
Echocardiogram
The test, done by inserting a transesophageal
echocardiogram probe through a patients
mouth and down the throat, allows doctors
to clearly examine the heart's structures
and arteries behind the heart. This test
is suitable for some patients, such as those
with thick chest walls. As it presents a
risk to esophagus (though at less than 0.5%),
the test is restricted only to the patients
whose conditions warrant the test. |
To
prepare for the test
|
- You will be advised to fast for 4-6
hours prior to the procedure.
- You must not have a record of allergy
to medications or swallowing difficulty.
- Remove dentures, if any, before the test.
- Prior to the test, each patient must
sign a consent form that gives his or her
permission to do the test.
