An
atrial septal defect is more frequently found in
female patients than in male counterparts, with
the ratio being 2:1. This method of treatment yields
a satisfactory result, as suggested by the survival
rate of 95% in patients over 40 years old undergoing
this procedure and the 84% survival rate of those
having drug therapy. Formerly, the common treatment
of ASD was major surgery. This traditional treatment
caused high risks of complications, required a
long period of hospital recovery especially for
senior patients, and left a scar on the chest,
causing an unsightly appearance particularly for
female patients.
This innovation in non-surgical
ASD closure is called ASD Closure with Umbrella
Device.
Benefits
of ASD Closure with Umbrella Device
|
1. Non-complicated procedures (requiring
the insertion of a catheter into a blood
vessel in the groin)
2. Reduced complications from surgery
3. No scar on the chest
4. Only 2 nights of hospital recovery
needed ( 6-7 days for surgical operations)
Limitations, however, still prevail in
this method of treatment- that is, it is
difficult to perform if the hole is larger
than 2.5 cm, and it can be performed only
when the opening occurs in the upper chambers
of the heart.
