For most people, when mentioning this disease, they often think it is incurable. However, in reality, it can be treated and the risk can be easily reduced by changing behaviors, such as reducing consumption of processed meats, fast foods, and buffets; avoiding excessive salty or sweet foods; quitting alcohol; not smoking; maintaining a healthy weight; and eating nutritious, high-fiber foods like cereals, whole grains, whole wheat bread, nuts, vegetables, and fruits—especially cruciferous vegetables and berries, which are rich in antioxidants. These also help prevent constipation and promote regular bowel movements. Additionally, aerobic exercise that strengthens the heart, such as walking, running, cycling, swimming, or playing badminton for at least 30 minutes a day, 3-4 times a week, drinking water frequently to stay hydrated, getting enough rest and sleep, training to have daily bowel movements, and frequently changing posture when sitting for long periods at work can greatly help keep colorectal cancer at bay.
However, colorectal cancer is a close-to-home issue. You don’t need a family history of colorectal cancer to be at risk if you are over 50 years old. Therefore, “early colorectal cancer screening” without waiting for symptoms is an important tool to reduce mortality from colorectal cancer. Currently, it is found that this type of cancer can be cured up to 90% if detected at an early stage.
There are several methods for colorectal cancer screening, such as fecal occult blood testing, digital rectal examination, and CT colonography. However, the easiest and increasingly popular method is colonoscopy, which involves inserting a flexible endoscope with a diameter of about 1 cm through the rectum to examine the colon. This method is convenient, quick, cost-effective, painless, and provides the highest quality examination details. It clearly shows abnormalities in the colon wall, allows tissue samples to be taken for accurate diagnosis, is more precise than X-rays, and can remove certain polyps that may cause colorectal cancer, avoiding the need for abdominal surgery.
