Implementation of computer system in bone and joint surgery

Currently, Information Technology affects numerous people such as leaving graphic massages through mobile phone and notification of bank deposit via SMS, using computer for storing surgery details or important patient history, installation of navigation system in vehicle to prevent us from being lost or reaching our destination faster. There are also computer system improvements in the medical field, especially surgery. Orthopedists have been implementing computer system for assistant in bone and joint surgery such as joint replacement surgery and bone marrow transplant due to the accuracy and precision required in the surgery. Computer assisted surgery can greatly increase surgeon capability.

The application of computer system in bone and joint surgery was founded since 1990 or roughly 17 years ago and has been continuously improved until it has been implemented in numerous surgeries such as bone marrow surgery, metal implant surgery and joint replacement surgery. However, the most widely use is for knee replacement surgery and hip replacement surgery. The important factor is the placement of the imitation joint. From the research done on treatment result and the age of the material used in knee and hip replacement surgery, the important factor is the appropriate location for imitation joint placement. Therefore, the system has been developed and improved to be faster, more accurate and more precise.

In the implementation of computer system, the surgeon would input the patient data into the computer system and the computer system will calculate and model the operation along with the calculation of appropriate joint replacement location for each patient in details. The surgeon who would perform the surgery will check to see whether the calculation were correct or not prior to performing the actual surgery resulting in surgery procedure, especially bone cutting, being highly accurate since the surgeon would be able to know the precision of bone cutting down to millimeter increment.

Even though surgery requires numerous and complex procedures, from the study, it was found that it would only take a surgeon that possess the expertise 20 more minutes to implement computer system in surgery. The surgery result does not only depend on the computer system, it must also depend on the patient condition prior to and during surgery, behavior and rehabilitation. All mentioned factors affect the surgery result. The computer assisted surgery is a tool that facilitates orthopedists in performing more accurate and precise surgery yielding satisfactory result and better quality of life for the patient. .
