Learning Disorder (LD) is a common cause of learning problems in children. Children with LD have difficulties in reading, writing, or calculating. They may be unable to read, write, or calculate at all, or perform below the level of children of the same age who have similar intelligence and learning experiences by at least 2 grade levels.

What causes learning disorders in children?

Learning disorders in children may be caused by genetics or other environmental factors such as neurological abnormalities, epilepsy, brain damage, premature birth, low birth weight, or problems during pregnancy, etc.

How many types of learning disorders are there?

  1. Reading difficulties are the most common type of learning disorder. Children may read slowly, read with difficulty, fail to grasp the main idea, or be unable to read at all. Some may be able to read through a book but do not understand the meaning of what they read.
  2. Writing difficulties may involve problems with fine motor skills used in writing, incorrect use of punctuation, improper grammar, and spelling problems, resulting in incorrect or illegible writing.
  3. Mathematical difficulties involve a lack of understanding of mathematical principles, inability to perform calculations, or solve math problems.

It is often found that these children are misunderstood as having poor memory, lack of concentration, laziness, unwillingness to do homework, or being distracted by play. As a result, they are frequently scolded, which not only fails to improve their condition but also causes them to feel resistant, bored with learning, reluctant to go to school, stressed, anxious, and feel worthless. Therefore, when parents or teachers notice that a child cannot read, write, or calculate at an age-appropriate level, they should take the child to consult a specialist for further evaluation and testing, and to provide appropriate learning support and care for the child.
