Doctors warn that urban lifestyles increase the risk of hemorrhoids and anal abscesses.

Phyathai Phaholyothin Hospital opens the Colorectal Center, extending specialization from the Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease Center to provide comprehensive care covering from the stomach, liver, all the way to the colon and rectum. Registration is now open for free hemorrhoid screening for 10 people, valued at over 17,000 baht until April 17.

Current urban lifestyles, such as sitting for long periods at work, consuming low-fiber foods, and chronic constipation, have become significant factors increasing the risk of anorectal diseases, especially hemorrhoids and anal fistulas, which are common among Thais, particularly working-age adults and the elderly. If not properly diagnosed and treated, these conditions may progress to complications requiring surgical intervention.

Rear Admiral Dr. Ton Kongpensuk, colorectal surgeon and director of the Colorectal Center at Phyathai 2 Hospital and Phyathai Phaholyothin Hospital, mentioned that the increasing number of anorectal patients in the working-age group today is partly related to lifestyle behaviors such as prolonged sitting at work, low-fiber diets, or chronic constipation.

“Many patients think hemorrhoid symptoms are minor and choose to self-medicate, resulting in visiting doctors only when symptoms become severe, such as pain, swelling, or pus around the anus. In some cases, this can progress to anal fistulas requiring surgical treatment. Early diagnosis by a specialist is therefore crucial as it facilitates easier treatment and reduces the risk of complications,” said Rear Admiral Dr. Ton.

To elevate care for colorectal patients, Phyathai Phaholyothin Hospital has opened the “Colorectal Center”, a specialized center providing diagnostic and treatment services for colorectal diseases, covering symptom assessment, endoscopic examination, and surgical treatment by a team of specialists.

According to Dr. Saraporn Kiatuubonwong, colorectal surgeon at Phyathai Phaholyothin Hospital, she commented that anorectal diseases can be effectively treated if correctly diagnosed at an early stage.

“Currently, there are treatment technologies that reduce pain and help patients recover faster. Many cases can return to normal daily life in a short time. Seeing a specialist allows for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning tailored to each patient,” Dr. Saraporn concluded.
