Macular degeneration is a common disease in the elderly, especially those aged 50 and over, or those with direct relatives who have macular degeneration, or have high blood pressure. There are 2 types of macular degeneration: dry type, which is the most common. It is caused by the slow degeneration and thinning of the central retina, causing gradual vision loss, which in some cases may develop into wet type. This type is found in only 10-15% of people with macular degeneration and is caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina, leaking blood and fluid into the retinal layers, affecting retinal function, which may lead to vision loss.
In the early stages of this disease, symptoms are difficult to notice, especially if it affects only one eye. The other eye may still see well, so the abnormality may go unnoticed. Currently, there is no cure for macular degeneration; treatment only slows down the progression. Therefore, early detection can help reduce the loss of vision that may occur.
Now that you know this, don’t forget to regularly check yourself and visit a doctor for eye health examinations. Early detection and timely treatment of macular degeneration are the most important.
