During the third trimester, the mother&#8217;s abdomen becomes much larger and expands rapidly, causing increased pressure on the veins behind the uterus. This expansion compresses the veins and lymphatic vessels, reducing blood flow back to the heart. Poor circulation causes swelling in the lower body.
