HPV vaccine in children


     Mostly, cervical cancer is found in Thai women as a second leading disease of death apart from the number one, breast cancer. According to Bureau of Epidemiology, Thailand data in 2017 presents that in a day Thai women have cervical cancer around 8,184 people per year. And over 50 percent of mortality considered as one of a major problem in public health. In that reason, vaccination against HPV, which is a virus that causes cervical cancer, has become the most effective way to prevent the disease. What people should know about the injection is a key principle of HPV vaccine that it should be provided to those who have never done intercourse as well as having a good immunity.  Consequently, the vaccine will be given to children at age of 9 and up to 26. It can prevent cervical cancer in girls, including condyloma acuminate and anal cancer in boys.

   

 HPV Virus

     HPV or Human Papilloma Virus is a virus that causes many genital diseases in both women and men. And the infection is made by  genital skin touching and sex.  Beside, the cervical cancer, HPV also be a cause for many diseases. 

        Girl:  Vulvar cancer, oral cancer, anal cancer, and Condyloma acuminate.

        Boy:  Penile cancer, oral cancer, esophageal cancer, anal cancer, and Condyloma acuminate.

   What is Condyloma acuminate? 

      Condyloma acuminate is a polyp which is extended from male and female genital causes pain and bad appearance on the skin.

 HPV Virus 

    There are 40 types of HPV that cause genital and anus diseases. Most infections are cured by the body, but few of them are permanent which can be one of the symptoms that relate to cancer.

  The HPV virus is divided into two groups:

   The first is a group that found causing cervical cancer, it consists of many species which are 16,18,31,33,45,52 and 58. The 16th and 18th species are found in people about 70 percent. At the same time , the second group found causing condyloma acuminate, consist of 6 and 11 species and are found in people about 90 percent.

Cervical cancer can be prevented by


1. Inspection, for example, pap smear, the inspection to find abnormalities of cervical cells and provide a timely treatment.

 

        2. HPV vaccination to prevent the cause of cancer is the HPV virus. Currently, there are two types of vaccines.

 

            Cervarix prevents cervical cancer caused by strains 16 and 18

 

            Gadasil prevents cervical cancer from strains 16 and 18 that include genital warts caused by strains 6 and 11 as well.

   Information for HPV vaccination by The Pediatric Infectious Disease Society of Thailand (PIDST) 

  • Recommend the injection for 15- to 26-year-old women by 3 shots in a month of 0, month of 1 – month of 2  and  lastly month of 6

     

    • In adolescents, if the first injection is before the age of 15, receive 2 shots at a month of 0, and from a month 6 to 12.

     

    • For the injection in boys, is considered specifically  for four types of vaccinations at the age of  9 and 26.
