How to Treat Migraine without Medications

Migraine is a chronic headache that causes suffering to quite a lot of people, and the best treatment for this condition is to prevent migraine symptoms from worsening. In addition to using medications, here are 5 ways to relieve migraine symptoms without relying on medications.

Method 1 Acupressure to Relieve Migraine

A study in 2012 that tested 40 patients who had migraine without aura (that is, who saw no flashes that are warning signs of migraine) found that acupressure at Position PC6 or right above the palm heel (toward the joint) by about 3 inches could reduce migraine symptoms. Additionally, using the thumb and index to put pressure at Point LI-4 or between the thumb and index of the other side by pressing for about 5 minutes on each side could also relieve headache symptoms caused by tension in the neck muscles.

Method 2 Inhaling Essential Oil to Relieve Migraine

Lavender-scented essential oil is an option to relieve stress and headache symptoms. This method has already been published in medical journals like the European Neurology journal with the suggestion that inhaling lavender oil can reduce the severity of migraine symptoms in some patients.

Method 3 Taking (Powdered) Ginger to Relieve Migraine

Perhaps you cannot help but wonder how on earth ginger can help relieve migraine symptoms. However, a study in 100 migraine patients in 2014 to compare the effectiveness of ginger powder to migraine medications like sumatriptan found that the migraine-relieving effectiveness of ginger was statistically equivalent to the effectiveness of sumatriptan, while ginger produced zero side effects, except in patients who were already allergic to ginger.

Method 4 Performing Yoga to Relieve Migraine

We might have heard before that doing yoga can relieve mental stress as well as muscle stress. Accordingly, a study in 2014 that divided migraine patients into 2 groups in which the first group received traditional migraine treatment alone and the second group received traditional migraine treatment along with yoga found that the people who participated in the yoga program experienced greater migraine symptom relief than those who received the traditional treatment alone.

Method 5 Magnesium Supplement to Relieve Migraine

Magnesium deficiency is linked to migraine with aura or flashes that is warn of impending migraine. This is supported by research that states that magnesium supplementation can help reduce the frequency of migraine in some patients. Nevertheless, before taking magnesium supplement, you should consult your doctor first, especially if you have other chronic diseases.

The above methods are only some options. If your migraine symptoms continue to be severe, we recommend that you consult a doctor for advice, because there are many medical ways to treat migraine as well such as drugs, acupuncture and Botox injection.
