Especially in urban areas with a lot of dust, special caution is needed regarding fine dust PM 2.5 because winter is a period of high atmospheric pressure and still air, so dust and smoke cannot rise and may accumulate in the area beyond standard limits.”</p>
<p style="">Fine dust is more dangerous to young children than adults because their respiratory systems are not fully developed. Inhaling dust causes inflammation and irritation of the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract, leading to coughing, nasal irritation, eye irritation, and fever. What is particularly concerning is that if PM 2.5 reaches the developing brain of a child, these tiny particles can damage brain cells, affecting intellectual development and the child’s learning ability.”</p>
<h2 style=" color: #008080;">How to protect your child from fine dust PM 2.5</h2>
<p style="">Parents and guardians should continuously monitor the PM 2.5 fine dust situation by checking dust levels through the Department of Health website www.anamai.moph.go.th, the Air4thai application by the Pollution Control Department, or the AirVisual application. If PM 2.5 levels exceed the standard, children should not play outdoors, doors and windows should be kept tightly closed, and air purifiers should be used. If it is necessary to go outside, children should wear properly fitting N95 masks that do not allow dust to enter. Additionally, parents should closely observe their children for symptoms such as unusual coughing or sneezing, runny nose, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, or rapid breathing, and promptly take them to see a doctor.</p>
<h2 style=" color: #008080;">‘Viruses’ – another harmful cause in winter</h2>
<p style="">Besides dust problems, viruses are another harmful factor during winter because viruses can spread and survive longer in cold air than in hot weather. Children are therefore at higher risk of viral infections than in other seasons. Common illnesses in children include:</p>

<li style="">Influenza</li>
<p style="">Influenza is a respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus, which has many strains and frequently mutates. Therefore, new strains of influenza outbreaks are heard of every year. Influenza patients often have a high fever for several days, especially children who may have a high fever exceeding 39-40 degrees Celsius, chills, headaches, body aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Usually, influenza can recover on its own within 5-7 days by drinking plenty of fluids, wiping the body when feverish, resting adequately, and taking symptomatic medication.</p>
<p style="">However, if not properly cared for, complications such as pneumonia, sinusitis, and bronchitis may occur. Children under 2 years old need special caution because their immune systems are not strong enough, making complications more likely and severe. If a child has a high fever and coughs until exhausted, they should be taken to see a doctor immediately.</p>

<p style="">During winter, outbreaks of diarrhea in children under 2 years old are often caused by rotavirus, which causes severe diarrhea. Even a small amount of the virus can cause illness. Infected children will start with fever and cold symptoms, followed by vomiting in the first 2-3 days before developing watery diarrhea.</p>
<p style="">Although there is currently no specific antiviral medication for rotavirus, patients usually recover within 3-7 days by symptomatic care, eating a light diet, and drinking oral rehydration solutions to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. However, in severe cases, patients may have large amounts of watery diarrhea, be unable to eat or drink, leading to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Some may experience shock, especially young children or those with underlying conditions, and should see a doctor immediately.</p>

<h2 style=" color: #008080;">How to keep your child away from viruses&#8230; with these methods</h2>
<p style=""><span style="color: #008080">Dr. Urarom Panthaphon</span> said, “Children often get viruses that cause these diseases from secretions in places where many children gather. Therefore, if your child is sick, parents should consider keeping them home from school to prevent spreading the virus to other children. Sometimes viruses can remain on toys, and children can get infected by putting toys in their mouths. Parents should make sure children wash their hands before eating every time, prepare cooked food, and regularly clean their belongings and toys. Another preventive measure is to have your child vaccinated against rotavirus diarrhea and influenza, especially influenza, as the virus mutates every year, helping to protect your child.”</p>
