<p style=""><span style="">Currently, Thailand ranks 1 among 14 countries with the highest tuberculosis infection rates in the world. Tuberculosis patients are still found, including new cases continuously emerging, often in children and adults, especially adults who can transmit the infection to children through breathing. Children are at higher risk of developing severe tuberculosis than adults, such as pulmonary tuberculosis, tuberculous meningitis, and bone tuberculosis, etc.</span></p>
<p style=" color: #008080;"><strong><span style=" color: #00826a;">How is tuberculosis transmitted?<br /></span></strong><span style=" color: #000000;">When the bacteria spread into the air, children can inhale the bacteria through breathing. This occurs when a tuberculosis patient coughs or sneezes, causing the bacteria to float in the air, allowing children to inhale the bacteria into their bodies.</span></p>
<h2 style=" color: #008080;"><strong><span style=" color: #00826a;">When should parents suspect their child has contracted tuberculosis?</span></strong></h2>
<ul>
<li><span style="">The child has a low-grade fever and a chronic cough lasting more than 2 weeks</span></li>
<li><span style="">Poor appetite and no weight gain</span></li>
<li><span style="">No improvement after taking antibiotics or antimicrobial drugs</span></li>
<li><span style="">History of contact with a tuberculosis patient or someone with a chronic cough</span></li>

<p style=" color: #008080;"><strong><span style=" color: #00826a;">How is tuberculosis treated?<br /></span></strong><span style=" color: #000000;">If tuberculosis symptoms are suspected in a child, the doctor will perform a chest X-ray and screening tests for infection, such as a skin test or blood test to check for infection. If the child is diagnosed with tuberculosis, it can be cured by treatment with tuberculosis medication, which involves taking the medication regularly for at least 6 months or more to prevent drug-resistant tuberculosis and to completely cure the disease. During the initial phase of medication, close monitoring is required to observe side effects and any issues with medication adherence. Once the child can take the medication well and symptoms stabilize, follow-up treatment can be scheduled every 3 months.</span></p>
<p style=" color: #008080;"><strong><span style=" color: #00826a;">How can tuberculosis be prevented?<br /></span></strong><span style=" color: #000000;">Doctors will take the patient&#8217;s history, such as whether they have lived with, been in contact with, or shared a place with a tuberculosis patient during the infectious period. Some children may be at risk of infection from caregivers coming from countries with a high risk of tuberculosis infection. For children who test positive on skin or blood tests indicating prior tuberculosis infection, preventive medication will be considered. It is also recommended to avoid taking children to crowded places and to use N95 masks to prevent infection. Currently, there is a tuberculosis vaccine called BCG vaccine, which is 50-80% effective in preventing tuberculosis. In Thailand, all children receive the BCG vaccine at birth.</span></p>
<p style=""><span style="">However, if parents suspect their child may have contracted tuberculosis, they should promptly bring their child to see a doctor for timely treatment.</span></p>
