Because receiving high doses of testosterone hormones may cause complications in pregnant women and newborns, trans men (transgender men) need to receive high amounts of testosterone for gender transition, and the hormone medications used for transition also contain steroids.
For those who want to donate blood, they must stop taking hormones for at least one week beforehand. However, for those undergoing gender transition, continuous hormone therapy is necessary without interruption because stopping or missing hormone doses may halt or prevent successful transition. Therefore, if the medication or hormone therapy is not stopped first, the donated blood could harm the recipients.
According to standards, blood collection must prioritize the safety of both donors and patients receiving the blood. Therefore, donors must be healthy and not regularly treated with any medications. Hormone therapy thus becomes one of the disqualifications.
Although everyone should have the right to donate blood, if their health is not ready, they cannot donate. Being an “activist” to find the best solutions for all parties with differing views is one way to express support.
However, at this time, we should follow the regulations of the Thai Red Cross Society.
