Post-Extraction and Oral Surgery Self-Care Instructions

Post-Extraction and Oral Surgery Guidelines:

  • Gauze Application: Bite down firmly on the gauze placed over the extraction or surgery site for 30-60 minutes. Then, remove and discard the gauze.
  • Cold Compress: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the outside of your mouth over the extraction or surgery site for 48-72 hours after the procedure.
  • Mouth Care:
    • Avoid vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours.
    • After 24 hours, rinse gently with a mouthwash or warm saline solution (1 cup of warm water mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of salt), especially after meals.
  • Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth as usual, but take care to avoid the surgical site.
  • Pain Management: If you experience pain, take one paracetamol tablet every six hours or follow the pain medication instructions provided by your doctor.
  • Avoid Interference: Do not touch the surgical area with your fingers, use toothpicks, or suck on the wound.
  • Activity: Resume daily activities but avoid strenuous exercise for the first 2-3 days.
  • Alcohol and Smoking: Avoid alcohol and smoking for 5-7 days post-surgery.
  • Diet: Eat soft and smooth foods for 5-7 days. Avoid spicy, hot, cold, and hard foods.
  • Monitor for Issues: Contact the hospital immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms or feel unwell.
  • Stitches: If you had stitches, return to the hospital to have them removed 7-14 days after the extraction or surgery.
