How dangerous is mycoplasma to your baby ?

Mycoplasma is a type of bacteria that can cause respiratory infections, including the common cold, sore throat, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Mycoplasma infections can occur at any age, but they are most common in children and adolescents. Individuals who are at higher risk are those in crowded places, such as schools, movie theaters, and shopping malls.

Currently, there is no vaccine available for mycoplasma infections. The best preventive measures include avoiding crowded places with many people, if possible. If avoiding such places isn’t feasible, wearing a mask and frequent hand washing—especially before preparing or eating food—are recommended. Additionally, using shared utensils when eating with others can help reduce the risk.

Symptoms of a mycoplasma infection are similar to those of the flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, and muscle aches. However, a distinguishing feature of this infection is severe coughing and its ease of transmission through inhaling droplets mixed with mucus or phlegm. After exposure, symptoms typically develop within 1 to 4 weeks.

If your child or any family member exhibits the following symptoms, seek medical attention promptly:

  • Fever above 38°C (100.4°F)
  • Severe coughing, rapid breathing, or retraction of the chest during breathing
  • Muscle pain
  • Possible rash on the skin
