Prepare yourself before hemodialysis

Self-behavior before hemodialysis

  1. Patients go for hemodialysis on time.
  2. Weigh before every hemodialysis session.
  3. Stop taking blood pressure-lowering medication about 4-6 hours before hemodialysis to prevent low-blood pressure during hemodialysis. Take other medications that are not blood pressure – lowering medication as usual and bring the blood pressure medication with you. Because in some cases, if the patient has high blood pressure during hemodialysis, the doctor may consider prescribing blood pressure-lowering medication.
  4. Report any abnormalities after the previous dialysis session to the doctor and nurses before dialysis, such as fever, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and inability to lie flat.
  5. In the case that the patient experiences bleeding in any part of the body, such as bleeding from the gums, vomiting blood or black stool, bloody or black stool, menstruation of wounds. It is included the preparations for various surgeries, dental work, the patient should inform the doctor and the nurse, so that they can reduce or stop taking anticoagulants during dialysis, as the patient may experience severe bleeding that could be dangerous.
  6. For patient with very high blood pressure and after hemodialysis with an artificial kidney, if the blood pressure does not decrease or increase again, please consult the doctor in charge to consider adjusting the intake of certain blood pressure-lowering medications before hemodialysis.

Post-hemodialysis behavior

  1. Weight yourself every time after dialysis.
  2. After hemodialysis with an artificial kidney, patient may experience fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. If these symptoms occur after returning home, patient should inform the doctor and nurses; so that the patient’s dry weight can be adjusted to a dry weight that is appropriate for the body.
  3. After completing each dialysis session with an artificial kidney, nurses will roll gauze into a ball, and press it on the area where the needle was inserted until they are sure that there is no bleeding. After that, a medicated plaster will be applied before returning home. If there is any blood seeping out of the wound, the patient should return to the hospital as soon as possible.
  4. After hemodialysis, there may still be residual effects of blood thinning drugs which are injected to prevent blood clotting during dialysis. When the patient return home, be careful of strong impacts, such as falling because it can cause the affected area to bruise again. If there is bruising, apply it with Reparil gel or Hirudoid, after that apply cold water on it. If there is a wound because of a sharp cut, apply clean gauze on the wound for about 10-15 minutes until the bleeding stops. If the wound is very large or the bleeding does not stop, go to the hospital immediately.
