Allergic diseases, the precise treatment is to avoid the causes that trigger the allergy. If we classify the common types of allergic diseases nowadays, they can be divided into several types such as skin allergies, respiratory allergies, and drug or food allergies. Allergy treatment can be done according to the allergic symptoms, which include taking medication and undergoing procedures to stimulate immunity. Continuous treatment is required to suppress the allergy, and it can recur if the root cause of the allergy is unknown. Therefore, the best treatment is to avoid the substances or triggers that cause the allergy. The identification of allergy causes can be divided into 2 types.
- Blood test Testing by drawing blood to check for allergy to specific allergens directly (Specific IgE), which can test for both food allergies such as cow’s milk, egg yolk, egg white, wheat flour, nuts, and airborne allergies such as dust mites, dog hair, cat hair. Blood testing can be done in children who cannot undergo skin prick testing, such as children with severe allergies who need continuous antihistamine medication and cannot stop the medication, or children with skin sensitive to pricking. The blood test takes time, and results are available within 5-7 days.
- Skin prick Test Testing by skin pricking involves applying allergen extracts onto the skin, usually on the forearm or back, then using a needle tip to prick the skin so the solution can penetrate under the skin. The body’s reaction to the allergen is observed for about 15-20 minutes. Skin prick testing provides immediate results but has limitations: antihistamine medication must be stopped before testing, and the child must have skin suitable for testing, i.e., not sensitive skin to pricking, as this may cause false negative results.
