Cancer and COVID: When Immunity is Low, Symptoms are More Severe

COVID-19 is an infectious disease that can occur in anyone, with symptoms ranging in severity from mild, moderate, to very severe, which can lead to death.

It can be seen that COVID-19 patients in the “elderly group” and “those with underlying or comorbid diseases” often have more severe symptoms than the general population. This is because “COVID-19 affects the immune system,” and especially if the patient has “cancer,” they are more likely to get infected and usually have more severe symptoms than healthy people or those with strong immunity.

Cancer and COVID

“Cancer” is related to the body’s immune system, causing reduced immunity to infections. Additionally, treatments such as “chemotherapy” or “radiation therapy” also cause periods when cancer patients have lowered immunity.

“Cancer patients” are therefore considered a high-risk group because if they get infected with COVID-19, they have a higher chance of death compared to the general infected population.

How should cancer patients live? During the COVID outbreak

In the current situation, it is believed that everyone is already taking good care of themselves by frequently washing hands, maintaining social distance, or wearing masks whenever going outside…

But for “cancer patients”, they must take stricter care of themselves than the general population. Those close to the patients must also be cautious and protect themselves to prevent “cancer patients” from increased risk of COVID-19 infection. Therefore, cancer patients should follow these guidelines:

  • Stay at home as much as possible and wear a mask at all times when at home
  • Avoid contact or close proximity with people who have respiratory symptoms or cold-like symptoms
  • During long periods at home, prepare enough medication and medical supplies
  • Avoid unnecessary visitors
  • Designate only one caregiver for the patient

Monitor symptoms, do not be complacent

Cancer patients should regularly monitor their health. If they have a high fever of 37.5 degrees Celsius or higher, dry cough, or runny nose for several consecutive days, as well as any other unusual symptoms, they should not ignore them. They should promptly see a doctor for consultation and thorough diagnosis.

Whether cancer patients or the general population, everyone must face this crisis situation… Everyone should be aware of the importance of self-care but not panic excessively about this disease.

“Being mindful in monitoring and serious about self-care” is therefore the best approach…
