“As a male physician providing obstetrics and gynecology care, what I have always upheld is to be courteous, gentle, and respectful, to honor my patients and adhere firmly to medical ethics.”

40 Years of upholding medical ethics

Dr. Sompong Thongsirikul, an obstetrician-gynecologist, has been treating gynecological conditions and overseeing pregnancy and childbirth for over 40 years. As a male doctor in this field, the challenge has always been how to earn his patients’ trust and ease their concerns during each visit. Through his unwavering commitment to medical ethics, he has earned the confidence of his patients and their families across generations—becoming like a family doctor, an older brother, uncle, or trusted advisor to many families.

“What I have held onto throughout my career is the importance of true professional knowledge. Staying updated on medical developments, understanding disease evolution, and studying treatment innovations— all to find the right answers for my patients. I use clear, respectful, and non-invasive language to avoid making patients feel uncomfortable or anxious. I encourage open communication until they are satisfied, so they can feel secure in receiving the appropriate treatment.”

Medical innovations may change, but sincerity toward patients remains

“Today, we witness many changes in medicine and treatment innovations. Even so, I remain a doctor first. Modern technology has certainly helped many patients, but not all conditions can be treated with new methods. Some still require traditional approaches, each with its own benefits. I always explain all available treatment options, their pros and cons, according to medical standards. Above all, everything I explain must come from a place of sincerity. I must be honest and straightforward—
choosing what is safest, most cost-effective, and most suitable for the patient. Patients are encouraged to seek additional information, explore alternatives, and consult with family members— this builds trust between doctor and patient.”

Using experience to understand patients across generations

“Patients today are very different.
The younger generation is more informed about gynecological issues, especially in the age of social media,
where information is readily accessible.
The internet plays a big role.
My long experience allows me to understand patients of all ages.
I tailor my communication style:
young people prefer clarity and detailed explanations,
while older patients seek warmth and familiarity.
Still, in every interaction, the professionalism of being a doctor must remain.
Even in private hospitals, our commitment is to healing—
to relieve patients from disease, worry, and physical suffering. That’s what brings me joy.”

Building Trust so patients feel safe opening up

With 38 years of experience in gynecology, Dr. Sompong has met patients of many backgrounds and personalities. This allows him to offer truly personalized care. Each patient—young or old, single or not—has different needs. When a doctor can connect with them personally, trust follows naturally. He ensures patients feel comfortable speaking with him, treating them as fellow women with shared concerns, and listening to all aspects of their health issues.

Beyond expertise: The importance of communication skills

Being a doctor requires more than medical knowledge—it demands effective communication. For patients anxious about internal exams, Dr. Sompong talks with them until they feel at ease, explaining that there are various levels of examination and they don’t need to fear pain. If abnormal cells are found, he knows how to discuss the issue in a way that informs without overwhelming. Even in cases of early-stage cancer, he helps patients find peace in the fact that early detection means it can still be treated successfully.

Finding joy in the work—and doing it wholeheartedly

For Dr. Sompong, being an obstetrician-gynecologist is both a source of happiness and a challenge. His journey began from a teacher’s advice, and he never regretted following it. For 38 years, he has walked this path, offering guidance and care to countless patients. It is a path rich in meaning—not just for him, but for the many lives he has helped along the way.
