“Toxins, live pathogens, and killed pathogens” – how are they related to “vaccines”?
The doctor explained the types of vaccines by categorizing them based on what the pathogen is made from.
1. Toxoid produced from bacterial toxins, such as tetanus, by using the toxin to make the vaccine.
2. Killed pathogens such as hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, and influenza virus, which are inactivated before using parts of them to make vaccines.
3. Live pathogens are weakened pathogens so that the body can easily eliminate them when injected.” The doctor noted that vaccines made from live pathogens require caution, especially for certain groups such as those on immunosuppressive drugs, chemotherapy, or steroids. If vaccinated while their immunity is low, there is a risk of side effects. This is why doctors always thoroughly question patients before vaccination.
Which vaccines should “elderly people” not miss? “We can refer to information from the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand, which recommends vaccines based on age groups. Generally, for “adults”, the cutoff is usually 50 years old. Vaccines recommended at this age include pneumococcal vaccine, shingles vaccine, and the influenza vaccine, which is recommended annually. A booster for diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus every 10 years is also advised.” Besides these vaccines, elderly people can receive additional vaccines based on cost-effectiveness and after consulting with a doctor. For those who want to get all vaccines at once, the doctor said it is possible but not recommended. “It is better to get vaccinated one at a time so that if there are side effects, it can be identified which vaccine caused them.” The interval can be weekly or monthly.
Is it dangerous to get vaccinated again if you have already been vaccinated? For those worried about this, the doctor said, “There is no problem with repeated vaccination; it can be done without adverse effects.” For example, the influenza vaccine is promoted annually because the virus strains differ each year. Usually, the vaccine contains 3-4 strains. Repeated vaccination boosts immunity so that when the body encounters a previously vaccinated strain, it will not get sick or at least reduce the severity of the disease. Regarding concerns about rescheduling vaccination appointments, the doctor said “Appointments can be postponed to a later date but should not be moved earlier because some pathogens require time for the body to build immunity.”
Don’t want to waste time… can I get vaccinated at a “clinic” near my home? Since vaccines require proper storage and care, the doctor commented, “Live vaccines are sensitive to temperature; freezing kills them, but heat is also harmful. Therefore, a good vaccine storage system is necessary in healthcare facilities, including proper transportation. At our hospital, when vaccines are ordered from pharmaceutical companies, the companies control and monitor the temperature carefully. Upon arrival at the hospital pharmacy, vaccines are stored in dedicated refrigerators with temperature monitors and backup power in case of power outages.” For cleanliness, safety, and vaccine quality, it is recommended to get vaccinated at a hospital that meets standards to ensure better quality.
 
Before vaccination, the important advice from the doctor is to ask as much information as possible about the vaccine, such as its components. If there are components suspected to cause allergies, they should be avoided. Also, inquire about possible side effects because each vaccine has different details. It is best to consult a doctor to consider what is most suitable for oneself.
