How to Treat Colon Cancer</h2>
When diagnosed with colon cancer, understanding the treatment options is crucial. Dr. Thanyadej explains that the primary approach is to surgically remove the cancerous tissue, along with the surrounding lymphatic system, lymph nodes, and blood vessels connected to the tumor. The goal is to eliminate as much of the disease as possible, and the removed tissue is then analyzed to assess the level of mutation and to check for evidence of spread in the lymph nodes and bloodstream. This detailed report from the pathologist helps determine the severity of the disease and aids surgeons and oncologists in planning the necessary treatment.

<li>For tumors located within the abdominal cavity, surgeons will excise the tumor along with an adequate amount of lymphatic and blood vessel tissue, depending on the tumor&#8217;s position. They will then connect the remaining sections of the intestine. However, if a patient presents in an emergency, such as with a bowel obstruction, the surgeon may opt for a less risky approach first: performing a colostomy. This involves diverting the bowel to an opening in the abdomen to allow waste to exit temporarily. After stabilizing the patient, a second surgery can be scheduled to remove the cancerous portion and reconnect the remaining bowel for normal function.</li>
<li>Tumors located at the very end of the colon, in the rectum and anal area, present unique challenges. This area is complex, as it is situated at the lowest part of the abdominal and pelvic cavity, surrounded by various organs. As a result, cancer here is more likely to spread laterally than in other parts of the colon. If a tumor is too close to the pelvic floor, reconnecting the bowel may be difficult or impossible, leading to risks of leakage and complications with bowel control. In such cases, surgery may involve the removal of the rectum, necessitating a permanent colostomy, where the upper portion of the colon is diverted to an opening in the abdomen.</li>

Doctor explains that advancements in medical engineering have led to the development of smaller surgical instruments and improved imaging systems. As a result, many surgeries can now be performed using minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic surgery. This method reduces trauma to the body and allows for faster recovery. Today, surgeries for all parts of the colon can be performed using minimally invasive techniques, enabling surgeons to operate in areas that traditional open surgery may not be able to reach effectively.
 
 
After the removal of a tumor, &#8220;monitoring&#8221; becomes a crucial component of post-operative care. Doctors will analyze the pathology results to determine the severity and stage of the disease, guiding whether additional treatments, such as chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or radiation, are necessary. The decision depends on the risk of recurrence or metastasis. Dr. Thanyadej emphasizes that regardless of whether supplementary treatment is needed, vigilant monitoring for recurrence or the emergence of new cancer is essential and should be conducted regularly.
 
 
Follow-up examinations focus on detecting signs of recurrence near the original surgical site and checking for potential spread to other organs commonly affected by this type of cancer, such as the liver, abdomen, and lungs. Additionally, surveillance for new tumors in the remaining portions of the colon is conducted through regular colonoscopies. Typically, follow-up occurs every three months during the first two years, then every six months until the five-year mark, after which annual check-ups are standard. Colonoscopies may be performed every two years.
