When the child is 3-4 years old but the anxiety symptoms have not decreased, parents should take the child to see a psychiatrist for an evaluation to determine if the child has Separation anxiety disorder. However, this condition usually resolves on its own without medication. If caregivers understand what the symptoms are, they can respond and adjust care appropriately for the child’s condition, such as understanding that the child’s anxiety is a symptom that can improve on its own, avoiding increasing anxiety by threatening or harsh punishment. When separation is necessary, such as going to school, parents should separate quickly without hesitation but maintain punctual pick-up and drop-off times to help the child get used to the idea that the separation is only temporary.
