<p style="">4S disease is a short term for Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS), which is a common skin infection found in infants up to 5 years old but is more common in children under 2 years old because their kidneys cannot yet eliminate toxins. This disease shows severe skin symptoms due to the toxin from the bacteria S. aureus, causing skin inflammation. Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent it, so children should be careful when coming into contact with the bacteria from various sources by washing their hands frequently.</p>

<p style="">At the beginning of the skin infection, the child may show no symptoms until the bacterial toxin enters the bloodstream, causing the child to have a high fever and red rashes all over the body. Especially on the face, scaly rashes appear around the mouth, eyes, nose, and neck, which is skin inflammation causing the epidermis to separate. After about 24-48 hours, the skin will start to blister, especially in the folds of the joints. When the skin blisters, it becomes thinner and wrinkled. If rubbed or touched even lightly, the skin will peel off, resembling a burn from hot water. The child will lose water through the wounds and is at risk of easy infection.</p>

<p style="">Doctors will consider treatment by administering intravenous antibiotics to treat the infection and compensate for fluid loss. For infants, it is necessary to be in a special care unit (ICU), clean the peeling skin wounds, give pain relievers, fever reducers, and topical medications to moisturize the skin. Usually, patients who receive proper and timely treatment will have wounds or rashes heal within 10-14 days without scarring.</p>

<p style="">When the skin peels all over the body, if not properly treated, there is a risk of infection that can occur from superficial organs such as the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, lymph nodes, to deeper organs such as bones, joints, liver, and kidneys. If the bacteria enter the bloodstream, it can cause diseases in various organs such as bones, lungs, and heart valves. According to statistics and research, S. aureus is the third leading cause of bloodstream infections and has a mortality rate of up to 26% if treatment is delayed or the bacteria become drug-resistant.</p>
