An unexpected event for many, just like ?Mr. Surapol Opasatein? one of the lucky survivors who had a chance to live through acute myocardial ischemia… after his heart had stopped beating for 2 minutes. This is the story of those life-saving minutes that he wants to share as a cautionary tale for many others who still prioritize other things over ?taking care of their own health?
<h2 style=" color: #008080;">Because I felt something was wrong… I didn’t hesitate</h2>
That day, I felt something was wrong after drinking some wine during a party after a legislative meeting at the National Legislative Assembly. I started having chest tightness, so I drank about 2 glasses of water, but the symptoms didn’t improve. Then, the chest tightness worsened, I started sweating heavily, slurring my speech, and the most noticeable symptom was numbness in my fingers and toes, which made me realize that something was definitely wrong with my body. I decided to leave the party immediately, telling my friends I needed to see a doctor because I suspected my heart was beating abnormally. I didn’t call the official car at that time; I only thought I had two options: take a motorcycle taxi or a tuk-tuk. Just then, a tuk-tuk arrived, so I stopped it, gave the driver 300 baht, and told him to go to Phyathai 2 Hospital and not to stop! At that time, I was at a party at the Renaissance Hotel near the Phra Phrom intersection.
<h2 style=" color: #008080;">Critical situation… every second is ?life?</h2>
While traveling in the tuk-tuk, my condition worsened. I tried everything to breathe, from coughing and sneezing forcefully, or what locals call “forcing myself to breathe.” During that time, I only thought about my family. I was so afraid I wouldn’t see them again. It took about 25 minutes to reach Phyathai 2 Hospital, but the tuk-tuk stopped at the wrong building — building 2 instead of building 1 — so I had to walk back to building 1 at the reception. The distance was only a few dozen meters, but at that moment, it felt extremely exhausting… like walking a kilometer.
After supporting myself to the reception, there were people being served, so I told the staff there that ?I can’t take it anymore, I can’t breathe, I’m about to lose consciousness? The staff quickly brought a stretcher and rushed me to the emergency room immediately.
Once in the emergency room, the doctor came to check my symptoms. The nurses quickly attached various tubes all over me (just like in ER movies). The doctor checked my initial condition and said something like “Red code,” which I understood as a signal that it was very serious. Then the doctor started stimulating me to keep me awake and conscious, trying to talk to me continuously while I had an oxygen mask over my mouth. The doctor asked me to try to breathe hard, and I told him I was very tired. Then a nurse asked me, “Mr. Surapol, who did you come with?” I answered, “I came by tuk-tuk.” I then asked for his phone to call my wife and gave it to the nurse before I fainted. Many people asked if I had any flashbacks at that time; I honestly said I only saw the faces of my child and wife when they were in the delivery room.
I regained consciousness when Dr. Amorn came to perform angiography and injected dye into my body. I felt heat all over. Later, I learned that CPR had been performed to stimulate my heart before I regained consciousness. While Dr. Amorn was treating me, after a while, he said the flow was restored. The chest tightness that felt like a sack of rice pressing down started to ease and gradually improved. The doctor told me I was very lucky because the blockage was more than 90%, but at that time, the cause was still unknown.
<h2 style=" color: #008080;">An important lesson… leading to self-change</h2>
After recovering, I began treatment and later learned from the diagnosis that this condition was caused by having too much fat in the blood. The fat combined with platelets to form clots that blocked the blood vessels. It all resulted from my eating habits and lifestyle. When I ate, the fat accumulated in my body, combined with neglecting self-care and working hard.
Today, I am strict with myself. I take care of myself, control my diet, avoid sweets, eat less fatty food, and exercise along with physical therapy. Because my life was like being dead for 2 minutes after I went into shock and lost consciousness, and my heart stopped beating. ?The doctor was worried whether my memory would be normal after waking up because during those 2 minutes, the chance was 50/50? I consider myself very lucky, luckier than many others, because after waking up, my brain still remembers everything perfectly.

So please let my story be an example of someone lucky enough to survive. But if it happens to many of you or happens to me a second time, I probably won’t be lucky and will never be lucky again.
