<p>Another variant that cannot be ignored is the L variant, which spread heavily in Europe and the United States. The L variant evolved into the G and V variants. The G variant has a mutation at position 614 on the spike (the protruding spike). Descendants of the G variant are further divided into two major variants: GR (Arginine) and GH (Histidine), which are currently spreading widely worldwide, including in Thailand.</p>
<h2><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Where Does the COVID-19 G Variant Come From and How Will Thailand Handle the New Wave?</span></h2>
<p>The news of a new wave of COVID-19 in Thailand began at the end of 2020, with cases found among travelers entering and leaving Mae Sot District, Tak Province. Later, a major outbreak occurred at the fish market and shrimp market in Mahachai, Samut Sakhon Province. This time, it was found not to be the S variant like the outbreak earlier in 2020, but the GH variant, a sub-variant of the G variant. This virus originated from India before spreading to the city of Yangon in Myanmar and eventually to Thailand.</p>
<p>It is not surprising that the new wave of COVID-19 in Thailand is the G variant because this variant is the most widespread in the world, accounting for nearly 90 percent currently. Part of the reason is that the G variant grows well in the respiratory tract, with a higher viral load found in the throat of patients compared to other variants, making it 10-20 times easier and faster to spread. Testing in State Quarantine in Thailand mostly detects the G variant as well. However, the advantage of this variant is that it does not cause more severe disease due to mutation. On the contrary, the severity of the disease has decreased, and most infected individuals show almost no symptoms.</p>
<h2><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Are Vaccines Produced from the Original Virus Still Effective?</span></h2>
<p>Since the immune system targets the spike protein or the protruding spike, which has not changed its shape, immunity from currently produced vaccines can still protect against COVID-19 despite the development of variants. Therefore, concerns about having to start over in researching and producing new vaccines because the original vaccines cannot be used against new variants are unfounded.</p>
<p>However, since vaccine production is still in its early stages and cannot meet the global demand adequately, prevention measures such as wearing masks properly, using alcohol gel before and after contact, avoiding crowded and closed-air spaces, and frequent handwashing remain crucial to effectively prevent the spread of the disease.</p>
<p>Whenever we realize that we are at risk, we should self-isolate at home for at least 14 days for our own safety and the community&#8217;s, because everyone plays an important role in ending the outbreak and returning to normal life.</p>
