What is Carotid Intima-Media Thickness (CIMT) Test? CIMT (Carotid Intima-Media Thickness) is a measurement of the thickness of the inner and middle layers of the carotid artery wall located in the neck. It uses the same principle as ultrasound to assess the narrowing of blood vessels, which is one of the causes of coronary artery disease, myocardial ischemia, stroke, hemiplegia, paralysis, kidney failure, and diabetic ulcers. These conditions are commonly found in people who are obese, have high blood pressure, or have diabetes.
Who should undergo Carotid Artery Narrowing Measurement (CIMT)? Those who should undergo the test are individuals at risk of carotid artery narrowing as follows:

<li style="" aria-level="1">Overweight or obese</li>
<li style="" aria-level="1">High cholesterol or low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in the blood</li>
<li style="" aria-level="1">Diabetes or insulin resistance</li>
<li style="" aria-level="1">Metabolic disorders</li>
<li style="" aria-level="1">Over 35 years old with a family history of high blood pressure, heart disease, or hemiplegia/paralysis</li>

CIMT Test Procedure The patient lies on their back with a pillow under their head. The examiner applies gel to the neck area and gently presses the probe on each side of the neck to perform an ultrasound. During the test, the patient must turn their face in the opposite direction of the side being examined. The test takes only 5-10 minutes. The images obtained will be analyzed by a doctor, and the results can be provided immediately. After the test, the patient can resume normal daily activities.
Preparation Before CIMT Test&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
<ul>
<li style="" aria-level="1">No prior preparation is needed; no need to fast, avoid water, food, or medications</li>
<li style="" aria-level="1">Wear clothing that is not tight around the neck or use clothing provided by the hospital</li>
<li style="" aria-level="1">Do not wear any jewelry around the neck</li>
</ul>
Interpretation and Evaluation of CIMT Results The CIMT test results are interpreted based on the ICA PSV value. If ICA PSV &lt;125 cm/s and no plaque or thickening of the artery wall is found, the artery is considered normal. There are also three main criteria used to summarize the results:

<li style="" aria-level="1">Narrowing value ICA PSV &lt;50% or ICA PSV &lt;125 cm/s but with plaque and thickened artery wall</li>
<li style="" aria-level="1">Narrowing value ICA PSV = 50-69% or ICA PSV = 125-130 cm/s with plaque</li>
<li style="" aria-level="1">Narrowing value ICA PSV &gt;70% or ICA PSV &gt;230 cm/s with plaque or associated arterial stenosis</li>
</ul>
The values obtained will be evaluated by the doctor by comparing them with standard values for people of the same age, gender, and ethnicity. If a high risk of coronary artery disease and other related diseases is found, the doctor will plan preventive measures by advising the patient to modify their diet, increase exercise, quit smoking and alcohol consumption, or if necessary, prescribe medication.

People who are overweight, obese, have high blood fat, or have diabetes are at a higher risk of coronary artery disease and stroke than the general population. Measuring carotid artery stenosis (CIMT) can help determine whether the blood vessels are still healthy.
