For example, if the child argues with a sibling over a toy, and the older sibling pushes the younger one, explain why this behavior is wrong and the consequences that follow. Help them understand that if they were in the younger sibling&#8217;s position and were pushed, they wouldn&#8217;t like it either.</p>

<p>Many stubborn children become more defiant when they frequently hear the word “don’t.” For instance, if you don&#8217;t want your child to make noise in a restaurant, instead of just saying &#8220;don’t make noise,&#8221; you might say, &#8220;Everyone in the restaurant will hear your secret, so let&#8217;s speak quietly.&#8221; Or if you&#8217;re worried about your child running and possibly falling, instead of saying &#8220;don’t run,&#8221; you could say, &#8220;Walk slowly so you don’t fall and get hurt. If you fall and get a cut, we’ll need to go to the doctor for stitches.&#8221; This approach helps convey your message more effectively.</p>
