When will the period return after childbirth, and how should mothers take care of themselves?

After childbirth, hormones change to bring the body back to normal. The mechanism that causes menstruation to stop is the ovulation mechanism, which is a natural form of contraception.

Breastfeeding mothers may experience delayed menstruation

After childbirth, especially for mothers who breastfeed 100% for at least 6 months, menstruation may be absent for up to 6 months or throughout the breastfeeding period. This applies only to mothers who breastfeed 100%, meaning the baby does not receive any other type of milk and breastfeeds every feeding session. Naturally, ovulation is suppressed about 60-70%, but it varies by individual. For example, younger mothers with very strong bodies may resume ovulation sooner, which can cause menstruation to return earlier. However, this does not mean that menstruation returning will reduce milk production.

How is postpartum menstruation different from regular menstruation?

After childbirth, the body needs some time to adjust, causing irregular menstruation that may be spotting. Menstruation usually returns about 1 month after lochia ends. For breastfeeding mothers, menstruation may be delayed according to the breastfeeding period. Mothers with good health may resume ovulation sooner, leading to earlier menstruation.

Signs to observe in postpartum menstruation

Symptoms are similar to normal menstruation, such as body aches and lower abdominal pain. However, in the beginning, menstruation may be irregular, for example, menstruation may come for 1 month and then stop for 1-2 months, or the amount and days of menstruation may differ from before childbirth.

During irregular menstruation, mothers may still have a chance of pregnancy because the contraceptive mechanism in breastfeeding mothers is only about 60-70%. Mothers who ovulate well, are young, and have regular sexual intercourse may conceive easily. If not ready, contraceptive pills or injections can be used. Mothers should consult a doctor to take contraceptives that do not affect breastfeeding and ensure safety.

Self-care methods for mothers after childbirth

  • Maintain hygiene by changing sanitary pads and cleaning the body thoroughly
  • In case of menstrual pain, pain relievers such as 500 mg paracetamol or warm compresses can be used
