From current consumption behaviors and lifestyles, there are negative impacts on physical health leading to obesity or abdominal obesity, which is believed to be caused by a condition called Metabolic syndrome. This is a group of abnormalities that are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Besides medication, treatment focuses on lifestyle changes such as weight loss through dietary adjustments and exercise. Exercise can be divided into 3 types as follows:
- Aerobic exercise is a type of exercise that involves continuous moderate to vigorous muscle exertion without stopping from start to finish. It is an effective way to burn energy. Examples include walking, running, swimming, cycling, and aerobic dancing.
- Strength training is exercise aimed at increasing muscle mass and strengthening various muscle groups in the body. Each exercise targets specific muscle groups and involves repeating movements multiple times, with or without equipment such as dumbbells, resistance bands, or body weight exercises.
- Flexibility and balance exercises are for people who are overweight or have high muscle tightness and lack flexibility. This can cause muscle contraction, limited movement, and poor balance, increasing the risk of falls. These exercises also help control the body to stay upright and include meditation training. Examples are yoga, Tai Chi, Qigong, and Tai Pran.
Exercise should be done daily for at least 30 minutes at a moderate intensity. Additionally, short bouts of exercise lasting 10-15 minutes, such as brisk walking or housework, done frequently several times a day, have also been found to be beneficial.
