Back pain.. is not a small matter. If left chronic, it may become “Spondylolisthesis”

Anyone who often experiences back pain should carefully observe their symptoms and seek treatment promptly because if left untreated for a long time, it may develop into spondylolisthesis.

How the spine works

The spine consists of joints that hold each vertebra together, including facet joints on both sides and intervertebral discs in the front, which are surrounded by ligaments to maintain the mobility of the joints. When these joints and ligaments around the spine degenerate due to overuse, the stability of the spine is lost, leading to slippage or displacement of the vertebrae.

“Spondylolisthesis” can happen to anyone

Whether male or female, young or old, anyone can develop this condition. However, it is most commonly found in middle-aged to elderly people because it results from back pain and soreness when sitting for long periods or walking long distances. When symptoms accumulate over time and vertebral displacement increases, it can compress nearby nerves, causing more severe symptoms such as radiating pain down the legs, numbness, and weakness. The severity depends on the degree of vertebral displacement.

Treatment depends on the severity of symptoms

If symptoms are mild, with minimal vertebral displacement or no nerve compression, doctors will treat with physical therapy, appropriate muscle exercises, weight loss to reduce pressure on the spine, and occasional pain relief medication. However, if there is significant vertebral displacement or nerve compression symptoms, surgery may be recommended to stabilize the spine with metal implants to prevent further displacement.

Health Tips

  • Soft ripe fruits like papaya and ripe bananas… add fiber to reduce inflammation
  • Foods high in iron such as spinach, climbing wattle, fish, shrimp, and shellfish… to compensate for anemia
  • Types of fish like sardines and salmon… provide vitamin D and B12 to aid absorption
  • Increase vitamin A and beta-carotene from cooked pumpkin and carrots… to strengthen the intestines

Remember, our body is like a good machine. If we keep using it heavily without proper care and maintenance, it will deteriorate. Take some time to care for your health so you can enjoy long-lasting good health.
