Colon Cancer: The Deadly Reaper Close to You

“Colon Cancer” The Deadly Reaper Close to You

Colon cancer is considered one of the top cancers that most Thai people suffer from. This disease occurs due to abnormalities in the tissue of the colon where, when cells multiply, the size of polyps or tumors turns into cancer. If not promptly seen by a doctor, these cancer cells will rapidly grow and spread to various tissues.

What symptoms… qualify as warning signs?

Abdominal pain in those suspected of having colon cancer may appear as ordinary pain at first glance. However, the difference lies in chronic abdominal pain, persistent bloating, black stools, bleeding, abnormal weight loss, easy fatigue, alternating constipation and diarrhea, and when palpating the abdomen, a lump may be found. These symptoms often do not show clearly, causing most patients to be unaware.

Who is the “at-risk group”?

It is often found in patients who frequently drink alcohol, smoke heavily, dislike exercising, prefer to sit still for long periods, as well as those who consume high-fat foods, junk food or fast food, grilled foods, and those who eat low-fiber fruits and vegetables. People who often have bowel movement problems are at even higher risk.

If detected… how to treat?

In the early stages, doctors may use surgery. If the cancerous tumor cannot be completely removed by surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy will be required as well.

Reduce high fat + increase dietary fiber, it helps!

For those who like to eat high-fat foods, it may be necessary to cut back because besides the risk of colon cancer, there is also a risk of obesity. Switch to eating fruits and vegetables high in fiber, such as guava and apples, as they help improve bowel movements. Also, drink plenty of water to prevent intestinal blockage from fiber.

Check your body a bit… for good health

For households with elderly members aged 50 and above, do not be complacent. They should be taken for check-ups as well. Whenever blood is found mixed with stool, it is urgent to see a doctor immediately. Additionally, colonoscopy screenings every 3 – 5 years are recommended for your health and the health of your loved ones.
