Adenovirus is a group of viruses that commonly occur in children, frequently found in the age group of 6 months – 5 years. It can spread easily through various routes such as direct contact with an infected person or through the air from coughing or sneezing.
Symptoms of Adenovirus in Children
Adenovirus can cause various symptoms in children, including:
- Red eyes, watery eyes, eye pain
- Cold symptoms, dry cough, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, snoring, including symptoms such as cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, respiratory tract symptoms, and fatigue
- Sore throat or inflammation in the throat causing sore throat, fever, and possibly difficulty swallowing
- Some cases may have diarrhea, vomiting, and fever
Transmission and Spread
Adenovirus can spread through multiple routes, including:
- Direct contact: with infected individuals, such as handshakes
- Airborne transmission: such as from coughing or sneezing
- Contact with contaminated surfaces: such as toys or personal items
Prevention
Prevention of adenovirus in children should focus on reducing exposure to the virus and promoting good health:
- Proper handwashing: is the primary method to prevent infection, especially before eating and after using the restroom
- Avoid close contact: with individuals showing symptoms of infection
- Use of masks: when near people who are sick
- Cleaning: frequently touched surfaces with disinfectants
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made by sending PCR for adenovirus and nasal swab for antigen detection from the respiratory tract.
Treatment
Treatment for adenovirus infection in children is symptomatic as there is no antiviral medication available.
- Hydration: to prevent dehydration from diarrhea or vomiting
- Use of antipyretics: such as paracetamol to relieve fever and discomfort
- Rest: adequate rest helps the immune system fight the virus more effectively
Overall, awareness and adherence to appropriate preventive measures can help reduce the spread of adenovirus in children. If symptoms are severe or do not improve, consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
