Reduce the risk of serious diseases... from anal sex

Anal sex is considered one of the normal forms of sexual intercourse and is commonly practiced among heterosexual couples, male couples, female couples, as well as group sex.

Viruses Increasing the Risk of Anal Cancer

Sexual intercourse is a beautiful thing, but regardless of the form, there is always a risk of disease. For example:

  • HIV Virus Infection (HIV)
Anal sex carries a higher risk of HIV infection compared to other sexual activities. This virus causes AIDS. Without antiretroviral treatment, the disease progresses to severe illness and can be fatal.
  • HPV Virus Infection (HPV)
HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that is common and easily spread. Infection with this virus can cause warts around the anus, but long-term HPV infection may lead to anal cancer.

Anal Cancer

Generally, anal cancer accounts for no more than 3% of all cancers in an individual. However, in people who have anal sex and are HIV positive, the incidence increases up to 30 times. The main cause of anal cancer is HPV infection (Human Papillomavirus: HPV) or engaging in anal sex. Symptoms begin with growths or lumps around the anus. Some may experience bloody stools or anal pain, symptoms similar to hemorrhoids, along with pain and itching around the anus. Therefore, if you notice any growths or lumps around the anus, you should promptly see a doctor for accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Prevention… to Reduce the Risk of Sexually Transmitted and Anal Diseases

A relationship based on care and caution can help reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.

  • Use Condoms
Condoms should be used every time during sexual intercourse because they are effective in preventing HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. However, condoms do not provide 100% protection against sexually transmitted diseases, so other preventive methods should also be used to reduce potential risks.
  • Get the HPV Vaccine
The HPV vaccine, which prevents cervical cancer, can also prevent anal cancer. It is recommended for both females and males aged 11 to 45 years.
  • Treat HIV Infection
For those infected with HIV, continuous antiretroviral therapy as prescribed by a doctor is necessary. This not only controls the disease from progressing to AIDS but also reduces the long-term risk of HPV infection and anal cancer.
  • Screening for Anal Cancer
Anal pap smear screening is similar to cervical pap smear screening, except the instrument is inserted into the anus to collect cell samples from the anal area to detect abnormal or potentially cancerous cells. If no abnormalities are found, screening should be repeated annually. If abnormalities are detected, a biopsy will be performed to determine the type of abnormality.

Screening increases the chance of detecting abnormal cells before cancer develops, greatly improving the chances of a complete cure.

If you want every relationship to be good… you must pay attention to each other’s details and “love” both yourself and your partner. Inviting your partner to get tested for sexually transmitted infections regularly will help reduce the risk of disease and the spread of infections effectively.
