Guidelines for 64-slice MDCT scanning

Preparation Instructions Before the Examination

CT Colonography

This examination can detect polyps in the colon that have abnormal growths, sized 6 mm or larger, easily and without complexity. There is no need to insert a long tube into the colon. It can examine parts of the colon that cannot be reached by endoscopy.

The examination is quick, taking about 15 – 20 minutes, and can also visualize other organs in the abdominal cavity during the same scan.

Preparation for the examination: Since the details of the colon wall need to be observed, it is necessary to clean the colon before the examination by eating a low-fiber diet for 2 days and taking laxatives 1 day before the examination.

Examination Procedure

  1. Air is introduced into the colon through the anus.
  2. Lie still on the examination bed in the position arranged by the staff. Buscopan may be injected to help expand the colon.
  3. Follow the staff’s instructions, such as breathing in and out and holding your breath, to ensure clear images from the scan.
  4. Data is collected using a CT scanner.
  5. The data is processed to create 2D and 3D images of the colon.
