Annual “Breast Cancer” Screening… Helps Increase the Chance of Complete Recovery!

Breast cancer… is ranked as the second most common disease among Thai women, after cervical cancer. The severity of this disease lies in the fact that the exact cause is unknown and there is no prevention method, but it can be cured! Dr. Komol Prechasananok, Breast Surgeon at Rak Breast Center, Phyathai 2 Hospital, explained the risk factors and diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer as follows…

Risk Factors of Breast Cancer

The causes of risk factors for breast cancer may include using contraceptive pills continuously for more than 5 years, having children later and not breastfeeding, having relatives with a history of breast cancer between the ages of 30-40, preferring a Western lifestyle, disliking exercise, or consuming a low amount of vegetables.

Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for Breast Cancer

In addition to taking the patient’s history to diagnose risk factors, the doctor will perform a physical examination based on age groups: patients under 35 years old will undergo ultrasound examination, while patients over 35 years old will have mammogram and ultrasound examinations.

In cases where the doctor detects a lump, a biopsy must be performed for further examination. The results can be known within one week to determine whether it is cancer and at what stage, to consider the treatment plan whether the patient needs chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy.
Although breast cancer is common, it can be cured… depending on the stage at detection. Even if a mammogram shows no abnormalities, do not be complacent. Regular annual screening is recommended because the earlier it is detected… the higher the chance of successful treatment!
