Dr. Thaninith says that it must be acknowledged that lack of exercise, low vitamin D levels due to insufficient sunlight exposure, and low calcium intake are factors leading to osteoporosis, which everyone in Asia is at risk of. While Asians tend to sit and lie down more, people in the West exercise more actively. Therefore, the risk of osteoporosis is higher, especially in women.
Why… are elderly women more at risk of osteoporosis?
As age increases, bones become thinner. Women are at higher risk because after menopause, they lose female hormones. Women over 60 years old have a 25% chance of developing osteoporosis. Another group at risk includes women who experience early menopause or have their ovaries removed before the age of 45.
Bone density testing… easy, effective, and uncomplicated
Dr. Thaninith says that bone density testing nowadays is easy, using a Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scan, which takes about 30 minutes to complete. The procedure is simple, easy, and effective. How often patients need to be tested depends on their bone condition. If the bones are still in good condition, testing every 4-5 years is sufficient. For those with low bone density who require treatment, annual testing may be necessary, depending on the patient’s bone condition.
To prevent osteoporosis, regular exercise, adequate vitamin D and calcium intake are recommended. It is also advisable to have baseline bone density checked to determine if any lifestyle adjustments are needed to strengthen the bones.
