Extreme heat! Risk of heatstroke.. life-threatening

Although Thailand has almost year-round summer, it seems that… April and May are the hottest months. Moreover, the excessive heat is the cause of many diseases, including emergencies such as “Heat Stroke,” which, if not treated promptly, can be life-threatening.

Heat Stroke is a condition where the body temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius along with neurological symptoms, especially changes in body awareness such as drowsiness, confusion, and sometimes seizures and loss of consciousness. In 2016, there were 21 deaths from heat stroke, and the number of cases spikes every year during April – May.

Being outdoors for a long time… increases the risk of heat stroke

Heat stroke occurs when the body is exposed to heat and cannot dissipate or adapt to the heat quickly enough, leading to heat stroke. It can occur in two forms:

1. Exertional Heat Stroke The weather is already hot, and exercising outdoors or in poorly ventilated areas increases the risk of heat stroke. It mostly occurs in outdoor workers, military trainees, or those who do not often engage in heavy exercise.

2. Non-exertional Heat Stroke This mostly occurs in young children, the elderly, or those with underlying diseases, especially heart disease, or in conditions where the body cannot dissipate heat.

Body temperature over 40 degrees is not just a normal fever

The main symptom of heat stroke is a body temperature higher than 40 degrees Celsius, causing fatigue, loss of appetite, headache. Some patients may not sweat, have low blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and the body cannot adapt, leading to delirium, convulsions, and loss of consciousness.

Heat stroke is dangerous, rush to the hospital immediately

If you find someone with heat stroke, quickly move them to a shaded area, lay them flat on the ground, elevate their legs to improve blood circulation, loosen their clothing, and apply cold water or ice packs to the body or spray water mist all over to reduce body temperature as quickly as possible, then rush them to the hospital.

In this hot weather, don’t forget to drink water and get enough rest. Avoid exercising or staying outdoors for long periods. Wear light-colored, breathable clothes that are not too tight. Let this summer be a bright one… far from illness.
