Although the issue of particulate matter such as PM 2.5 has recently become a trending topic in Thailand, the problem of air pollution has actually been ongoing. Previously, there were reports about particulate matter in Chiang Mai province, which is a basin area causing a significant amount of trapped dust in that region. Additionally, foreign countries report particulate matter almost every year, especially China, due to the growth of industries and vehicles in cities. Besides the factors causing changes in air conditions, another thing that we as the public need to be aware of is the health impact because these tiny particles can cause more harm than expected.
Did you know? PM 2.5 particulate matter increases the risk of lung cancer
Countries with large industries around the world often face particulate matter problems continuously, leading to research on small particulate matter PM 2.5. It was found that cities where the population is exposed to PM 2.5 have a much higher risk of lung cancer than populations not exposed to PM 2.5. Especially, people working in industries may have an even higher risk, and lung cancer patients exposed to PM 2.5 have a much higher chance of death than usual. However, the duration of exposure to PM 2.5 that increases the risk of lung cancer has not yet been clearly reported in research.
How can we reduce the risk factors for lung cancer?
Thailand, which is continuously developing, has seen the emergence of more industries and vehicles, which are the main factors causing PM 2.5 particulate matter. To reduce PM 2.5 particulate matter, “we should upgrade the quality of vehicles to meet standards and protect ourselves by staying in well-ventilated air. If it is necessary to face PM 2.5 particulate matter, wearing an N95 mask to filter the dust is recommended.” However, since N95 masks are relatively expensive, some people may find other types of masks as substitutes to also protect against PM 2.5 particulate matter.
