For Orthodontic Patients After the orthodontist removes the braces, many people feel happy and think the treatment is finally complete. However, in reality, right after the braces are removed, the condition of the gums, teeth, and bone is still not very stable. This is the reason why teeth can quickly shift back and may become crowded or misaligned again. Therefore, the orthodontist needs to provide a retainer to maintain the teeth’s position after the braces are removed. The orthodontist will advise on self-care after removing the braces as follows:
1. The dentist will perform a thorough check for cavities and gum inflammation. Additional X-rays may be taken to check for cavities between teeth or to examine wisdom teeth, to ensure the teeth are clean and strong after orthodontic treatment.
2. Brush and clean your teeth thoroughly after every meal, or at least twice a day, combined with flossing before bedtime at minimum.
3. Wear the retainer continuously for at least 6 months, then wear it every night while sleeping.
- Remove the retainer only when eating and brushing your teeth.
- Clean the retainer with a toothbrush and soapy water or dishwashing liquid on the side that contacts the teeth.
- If there is stubborn tartar buildup, soak the retainer in a mixture of water and vinegar in a glass at a 2:1 ratio for about 4-6 hours, then brush clean with soapy water.
4. You should visit the dentist regularly every 6 months for dental check-ups.
- Check dental health and the stability of the teeth.
- Inspect the retainer to ensure its effectiveness in maintaining teeth position.
5. If the retainer is lost, warped, or bent, contact your orthodontist immediately for inspection or replacement. Do not attempt to adjust it yourself as it may cause permanent distortion.
- There are various types of retainers designed to suit the patient’s dental condition to maintain the best teeth position, so you should see the orthodontist who provided your treatment.
- If you grind your teeth at night, it can cause the retainer to break. Inform your orthodontist so they can design a suitable retainer and provide a night guard to protect against teeth grinding.
