Epilepsy in children

  Epilepsy usually occurs in children at age of 5, but parents can protect it by observation and seeing some disorders in order to bring them for receiving a treatment promptly. What is Epilepsy ?

 Recurrent seizures are not caused by stimulants such as mineral dysfunction, infections in the central nervous system and high fever. These are common neurological problems that are often found. The age range that epilepsy incidence usually occurs is in children age of 5. After that, the risk of epilepsy will be decreased but come back in elderly with a higher risk. However, the seizures can have many recurrences depending on many factors.

• Have an abnormal body movement.

Types of Seizures 

Focal seizures: it is a change of brain waves from one spot within the brain. That causes various symptoms. Accordingly, a patient may lose consciousness. For instances, arm or leg jerk on one of each side, or seizures that turn his or her head to one side.
 

Generalized seizure: It is a change of brain waves in wide radiant. Causing effect on both sides of the brain dysfunction. In addition, it usually causes a patient to lose consciousness, such as convulsions, spasm, and abstraction or falling due to loss of muscle tension.

Epilepsy diagnosis

    A diagnosis requires a history of physical examination in accordance with birth records, child development, brain injury, toxic substances exposure, history of seizures among relatives. Including, neurological examination, head size measurement and skin disorders test, etc. Besides, it also requires laboratory tests which are 1. Blood tests to see the level of sugar and minerals in the body. 2. Lumbar puncture, this is provided in case of having nervous system infection. Or suspected of having seizures from certain genetic diseases. 3. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a very useful procedure that helps to confirm the diagnosis including epilepsy classification and guides a treatment with prognosis.4. Radiologic examinations such as CT scan and MRI, which are performed in focal seizures, detection of neurological disorders. Or in cases of uncontrolled seizure.

1. Seizure Treatment

• Keep the patient in the proper position.

 

• Provide respiratory care and blood circulation.

 

• Use of anticonvulsant.

 

• Get blood or laboratory tests to find the cause of seizures.

 

• Provides Hypodermoclysis.

 

2. Epilepsy-Prevention  
    Anticonvulsants selection for each type of seizures is necessary, including letting parents know about advantages and side effects from drug usage in order to make a final decision. According to symptoms which are under control, the drug should be continued using for about 2-4 years, besides, after a patient receives anticonvulsant, post symptoms must be followed closely, later a blood test will be provided to see medicine levels in the blood.  Moreover, that includes side-effect monitoring which may cause by medication. However, when medication is completed taken according to due time, at the same time, ensure there is no symptom. Hence, a patient will be considered for stopping the anticonvulsants use.
