H. pylori, the harmful bacteria causing stomach cancer

H. pylori

Did you know! Gastric disease is caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria, also known as H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori or abbreviated as H.pylori)
Gastric disease is a common disease in the digital age. It is a condition with ulcers in the stomach or inflammation of the stomach lining. Most cases are chronic, and if left untreated or not properly managed, symptoms may come and go, leading to complications if neglected, which can be life-threatening.

Looking back to get to know (Helicobacter pylori)

Going back to 1983, Australian doctors Barry Marshall and Robin Warren were able to culture the H. pylori bacteria and found that the bacteria are associated with the development of gastritis.

H. pylori in the stomach

Regarding the H. pylori bacteria, studies have been ongoing for many years and it is now accepted that H. pylori bacteria cause ulcers in the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine, as well as increase the risk of stomach cancer.

What are the symptoms when infected?

In most people, this infection does not show symptoms. However, in some cases, symptoms are similar to those of gastritis, such as stomach pain, indigestion, bloating, and fullness. In severe inflammation cases with ulcers in the stomach or upper small intestine, those who develop stomach cancer caused by H. pylori infection experience more severe and chronic gastritis symptoms.

How to know if you are infected with H. pylori

  • Endoscopic biopsy of the stomach lining for pathological examination to detect the bacteria
  • Culture of tissue samples from the stomach
  • Urea Breath Test: the patient drinks a radioactive urea solution to test for H. pylori infection
  • Blood test to detect antibodies against the bacteria
  • Stool test to detect the bacteria

Transmission of H. pylori

H. pylori infection is transmitted from person to person through food intake. The bacteria enter the stomach and penetrate the epithelial cells. This type of bacteria has mechanisms that allow it to survive in the stomach without being naturally expelled by the body’s defenses.

Eradication of the bacteria

Treatment involves taking medication, including acid-reducing drugs combined with antibiotics. About one month after stopping the medication, the doctor will schedule a follow-up examination.

How to take care of yourself to stay away from the harmful H. pylori bacteria

1. Maintain personal hygiene and safety, wash hands frequently
2. Food consumption
  • Eat freshly cooked food
  • Use a shared spoon every time
  • Eat a balanced diet with all 5 food groups
  • Focus on clean, safe food free from additives
3. Do not smoke and avoid alcoholic beverages
4. Exercise regularly
5. Keep a positive mindset
6. If diagnosed with H. pylori infection, follow continuous treatment as advised by your doctor
However, Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori, has a significant impact on gastric disease. If the bacteria are detected and not continuously treated until eradicated, the gastric disease cannot be completely cured. It also increases the risk of stomach ulcers and raises the chance of developing stomach cancer.
