For those interested in correcting vision problems with LASIK but are unsure which method to choose, today we introduce a new technology called Femto-LASIK or “bladeless LASIK”, which is a method to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by using a Femtosecond laser to separate the corneal layers instead of using a blade.
How is the Femtosecond laser better than blade LASIK?
- The separation of the corneal layers is more precise and the thickness is more appropriate.
- The cutting surface is smooth, allowing the wound to heal faster.
- The recovery time is shorter compared to LASIK using a blade (Microkeratome).
- Reduces the risk of inflammation or infection from corneal layer separation with a blade.
Who is suitable for Femto-LASIK?
- Age over 18 years old
- Cornea is not too thin, and pupil size is not too large
- Does not have severe dry eye disease
- Has had stable vision for more than 1 year
- Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- No history of certain eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, thin or bulging cornea, or uveitis
- Does not have certain diseases that cause slow wound healing or immune-related diseases such as diabetes, SLE
*The doctor will assess whether Femto-LASIK or PRK is the most suitable and safest method for correcting the patient’s vision.
What are the steps involved in Femto-LASIK?
- Use the Femtosecond Laser to separate the corneal layers or create a flap instead of a blade
- Separate the corneal layers
- Lift and fold the corneal flap to prepare for corneal reshaping with the Excimer Laser
- Use the Excimer Laser to reshape the curvature of the cornea
- Close the corneal flap back into place
