For those interested in correcting vision problems with LASIK but are unsure which method to choose, today we introduce a new technology called Femto-LASIK or “bladeless LASIK”, which is a method to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by using a Femtosecond laser to separate the corneal layers instead of using a blade.

How is the Femtosecond laser better than blade LASIK?

  1. The separation of the corneal layers is more precise and the thickness is more appropriate.
  2. The cutting surface is smooth, allowing the wound to heal faster.
  3. The recovery time is shorter compared to LASIK using a blade (Microkeratome).
  4. Reduces the risk of inflammation or infection from corneal layer separation with a blade.

Who is suitable for Femto-LASIK?

  1. Age over 18 years old
  2. Cornea is not too thin, and pupil size is not too large
  3. Does not have severe dry eye disease
  4. Has had stable vision for more than 1 year
  5. Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  6. No history of certain eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, thin or bulging cornea, or uveitis
  7. Does not have certain diseases that cause slow wound healing or immune-related diseases such as diabetes, SLE

*The doctor will assess whether Femto-LASIK or PRK is the most suitable and safest method for correcting the patient’s vision.

What are the steps involved in Femto-LASIK?

  1. Use the Femtosecond Laser to separate the corneal layers or create a flap instead of a blade
  2. Separate the corneal layers
  3. Lift and fold the corneal flap to prepare for corneal reshaping with the Excimer Laser
  4. Use the Excimer Laser to reshape the curvature of the cornea
  5. Close the corneal flap back into place
