Typhoid fever, or enteric fever, is a type of bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It is transmitted through consuming contaminated food or water. If left untreated and severe complications occur, it can lead to “kidney failure”!
These warning signs indicate a risk of “enteric fever”
Symptoms of typhoid fever or enteric fever include high fever, headache, body aches, loss of appetite, fatigue, possible rash, diarrhea, or constipation. If untreated, the fever can last for 3-4 weeks. Some patients may develop severe complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal perforation, or kidney failure. Meanwhile, some patients… even after recovery, can still be carriers and spread the infection to others.
What is the injectable typhoid vaccine?
It is a vaccine made from killed typhoid bacteria, which helps prevent typhoid fever in vaccinated individuals. It is suitable for adults and children over 2 years old.
Who “should” receive the typhoid vaccine?
- Those traveling to areas where the disease is endemic, such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, countries in Latin America, or Africa, should get vaccinated at least 2 weeks before traveling.
- People who are close contacts or live with typhoid carriers.
- Laboratory personnel working with typhoid bacteria.
- Those at risk of exposure should receive a booster dose every 2-3 years.
Who “should avoid” the typhoid vaccine?
- Those who have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous typhoid vaccine.
- If you have a fever or acute illness, vaccination should be postponed until recovery. Mild colds without fever are acceptable for vaccination.
Possible side effects after receiving the typhoid vaccine
- Severe allergic reactions may occur, but these are very rare. Most people who receive the typhoid vaccine experience no problems.
- Common reactions after vaccination include pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site.
- Mild fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea may occur but are usually not severe and resolve within 1-2 days.
- If there is pain, swelling, or redness at the injection site, cold compresses can be applied. For mild fever, antipyretics can be taken. If other unusual symptoms occur, consult a doctor.
Note:
-
- There is insufficient data on the use of this vaccine in pregnant or breastfeeding women; it may be given if necessary.
- Even after vaccination, it is important to consume clean food and water because a large amount of bacteria can still cause infection.
- This vaccine does not protect against infections caused by other types of Salmonella.
- If you have any questions, consult a doctor.
