A cataract is a condition where the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, resulting in blurred vision as less light reaches the retina. Over time, this can make everyday tasks difficult and uncomfortable for the patient.
The eyes function like a camera, capturing light from objects that passes through the cornea and lens before focusing on the retina. When the lens becomes cloudy due to a cataract, it disrupts this process, leading to visual impairment, sometimes to the extent that it severely affects daily life.
Warning signs and symptoms
Cataracts typically develop slowly without pain. Vision may worsen in bright sunlight but improve in low light conditions. Other symptoms include double vision, glare from headlights while driving at night, and the need for frequent prescription changes. Cataracts can affect anyone, though age, eye injuries, chronic conditions like diabetes, and long-term medication use can increase the risk.
Is cataract dangerous ?
If left untreated, cataracts can lead to serious complications like glaucoma or severe inflammation, and may even result in blindness. Surgery, however, can effectively improve vision by removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens.
Cataracts and aging
Cataracts are most common in older adults, especially those over 50. Early detection and treatment can prevent vision loss and improve quality of life. It’s recommended that people over 45, especially those with underlying conditions like diabetes, get regular eye exams.
Treatment options
- Non-surgical approaches: In the early stages, glasses or eye drops may help, but they typically do not reverse the condition.
- Surgical intervention: The most common and effective treatment is cataract surgery using ultrasound technology to break up and remove the cloudy lens, followed by the implantation of an artificial lens.
Preventing recurrence
Once the cataract is surgically removed, it will not return. However, in some cases, the lens capsule may become cloudy within 3-5 years, causing vision to blur slightly. This can be treated easily with a laser procedure to clear the capsule.
