Retinal examination with OCT technology

The retina is the innermost layer of the eye and is crucial for clear vision. Since the retina cannot be replaced or artificially replicated, it’s important to maintain good eye health and prevent premature retinal deterioration.

How is retinal health checked ?

Traditionally, ophthalmologists examine the retina by looking through the pupil, often dilating it with eye drops for a clearer view. However, this can cause temporary blurry vision, light sensitivity, and is not ideal for patients with narrow eye angles. Additionally, dilating drops can sometimes trigger acute glaucoma.

With advancements in medical technology, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has become a more efficient and accurate method for diagnosing eye conditions. OCT scans cross-sectional images of the retina using laser light, helping ophthalmologists detect abnormalities and track the progress of treatments with high precision. This method also minimizes discomfort for the patient and reduces risks associated with traditional eye examinations.

How OCT technology assists in diagnosing eye conditions

OCT uses laser light to create 2D and 3D cross-sectional images of the retina, allowing doctors to observe retinal layers with 10-15 micron resolution. This enables detection of retinal thickness and abnormalities, similar to a microscopic biopsy, but without invasive procedures. OCT can also examine the junction between the vitreous (eye fluid) and the retina’s central area to check for any pulling or detachment.

Eye conditions OCT can diagnose

OCT is capable of diagnosing various eye diseases, including:

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetic macular edema
  • Retinal vein occlusion
  • Epiretinal membranes
  • Retinal detachment
  • Glaucoma

OCT is a quick, painless, non-invasive procedure that does not require pupil dilation or injections, making it a preferred method for retinal examinations.
In conclusion, OCT technology has revolutionized eye care, offering accurate and detailed diagnoses of retinal diseases while enhancing patient comfort.
