“CVS” Eye Disease… That Digital Era Workers Must Beware

“CVS” or computer vision syndrome is an eye condition caused by prolonged computer use… without resting your eyes!! If you are one of those who use a computer almost all day for work, you should know that… you are at risk of these conditions.

1. Eye Muscle Fatigue

Because staring at the computer screen… requires intense focusing!! To adjust the image on the screen clearly… plus moving your eyes back and forth to read the text, it causes eye muscles to become tired… when using your eyes continuously for more than 2-3 hours.

2. Visual Symptoms

For those who do not have pre-existing vision problems, prolonged intense focusing for many hours… may trigger temporary myopia. But for those who already have vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, heavy eye use without correction… will worsen the vision abnormalities.

3. Dry Eye Condition

Normally, people blink about 20 times per minute, but for computer users… the number of blinks decreases!! Because of focusing on the screen… combined with cold and dry air from air conditioning, it makes dry eyes more likely to occur.

4. Light Sensitivity

Whether it’s a computer, smartphone, or tablet, we often adjust the brightness differently. Adjusting the brightness too dim or too bright!!! causes eye discomfort… and if left for a long time, it can lead to light sensitivity in the eyes.

Protect Your Eyes… With These Techniques!!

  • Adjust the distance between you and the screen… so that your eyes are level with the top edge of the computer screen, or the screen is about 20 degrees below eye level, and the distance should be about 16-30 inches.
  • After using your eyes for about 20-30 minutes, take a 2-4 minute break, and every 2 hours, rest your eyes by looking into the distance for about 15 minutes before returning to work.
  • Adjust the computer screen brightness to suit your eyes… including the lighting in the workspace, and avoid placing the computer screen facing a window or directly in front of a window to prevent glare on the screen.
Although CVS is not serious… it can reduce quality of life and work efficiency. Therefore, we should pay attention to eye care… and if abnormalities occur, we should see an ophthalmologist for a thorough examination.
