Clearing up doubts: Does "braces" really help make your nose higher and your face slimmer?

Everyone wants to have a beautiful face shape and teeth. “Orthodontics” is therefore one of the top choices that people are interested in because, besides having neatly aligned teeth, many also believe that orthodontics can help make the face look slimmer and more attractive.

Does “orthodontics” really change the face?

The main purpose of orthodontics is to correct problems in the oral cavity, whether it is crooked teeth, crowded teeth, misaligned teeth, or improper bite. However, a side effect of orthodontics is that some people may experience changes in their facial shape. Some faces become smaller, and chins appear longer, which happens because protruding or crowded teeth cause the lips to protrude. When teeth are pulled back or aligned through orthodontics, the teeth move inward, leading to changes in the facial shape. The effects of orthodontics vary from person to person; some may see changes in their face, while others may not notice any difference at all.

Why does the face change?

When orthodontics is combined with tooth extraction and the teeth become more orderly, it reduces the protrusion of the jawbone. The lips that used to protrude will retract along with the teeth, resulting in a change in facial shape. Additionally, in some cases, the nose and chin may appear more prominent, making it seem like the nose is higher and the chin is more defined, even though the nose and chin themselves remain the same.

What types of teeth cause facial changes after orthodontics…

    • People with very protruding front teeth that cause the lips to protrude. After orthodontics, the teeth will retract, and the lips will follow, resulting in a changed facial shape. This may make the nose, cheekbones, and chin appear more prominent.
    • People with gaps between teeth or crowded teeth. When the teeth are aligned, the smile will look better.
    • People with an overbite where the upper teeth cover the lower teeth. After orthodontics, the lower teeth will be more visible, which can make the face look longer.
    • People who need jaw surgery due to a protruding jaw causing improper bite. After jaw surgery, the jaw will be smaller, resulting in a changed facial shape.

Not everyone’s face changes

It is true that orthodontics makes teeth align beautifully, but not everyone who undergoes orthodontics will have a changed facial shape. Changes may only occur in some people. The results of orthodontics depend mainly on the original condition of the teeth and facial features. Some people may not see any external changes after orthodontics, while others may have a more prominent nose, a smaller face, and a more attractive appearance. Each person is different.

If you want beautiful aligned teeth along with a more defined facial shape, orthodontics may not help completely. But one thing is certain: after orthodontics, you will have beautifully aligned teeth, good oral health, and a confident smile for sure!!
