Besides liver, lung, and breast cancer, “colorectal cancer” is also one of the most common cancers in Thailand… and its incidence is increasing!! Colonoscopy is therefore considered an effective innovation used to examine abnormalities inside the colon, helping doctors to accurately diagnose diseases, leading to targeted treatment… and increasing the chances of survival from colorectal cancer!!
How to prepare before a colonoscopy
- Eat soft, easily digestible foods with low fiber and reduce high-fiber fruits and vegetables at least 3 days before the examination day.
- Take laxatives as prescribed by the doctor to ensure the colon is clean and free of stool residue.
- Fast from food and milk on the day of the examination but you may drink water.
- If you have dentures, remove them before the colonoscopy.
- Because the preparation causes frequent bowel movements, it is very important to have a relative accompany and take care of you.
- Inform the doctor of any drug allergies, underlying diseases, or regular medications you are taking.
Recommendations during the examination
During the examination, you should lie still on the bed in the left lateral position with both knees bent close to your chest. This is because the colonoscope may press against the colon, causing a feeling of fullness or discomfort in the abdomen or the urge to defecate, as the doctor will inflate air to expand the colon walls to observe the pathology inside the colon.
Post-colonoscopy care
- If sedatives were given, you should rest in the recovery room until fully conscious before going home.
- If the doctor prescribes medication, take it completely and strictly as directed.
- For continuous and effective treatment, attend all follow-up appointments as scheduled by your doctor for your own benefit.
- If you feel hungry, you may drink water or eat soft foods.
Symptoms after colonoscopy
After the colonoscopy, patients may feel abdominal discomfort and the urge to defecate because the doctor has inflated air into the colon walls to expand the colon for examination of internal pathology. Any pain in the lower abdomen or anus will gradually subside.
