How to prevent sinusitis?

When a patient has sinusitis symptoms, they will suffer from nasal congestion, headaches, eye socket pain, ear fullness, or toothache. If the patient endures or refuses to seek treatment, as the symptoms worsen, the risk of serious complications increases.
Normally, sinusitis is a condition that requires time to treat. Patients must take the medication as prescribed by the doctor and should not stop the medication on their own. Following the doctor’s advice and receiving continuous treatment, along with maintaining health by avoiding risky behaviors, will help reduce the chance of recurrence.

How to behave to stay away from sinusitis?

Things to do

  • Maintain a strong body by exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet with all five food groups, drinking enough clean water, staying in well-ventilated areas, and getting enough rest.
  • Wear warm clothing when in cold environments, such as air-conditioned rooms.
  • Take care of oral health by keeping gums, tongue, and teeth clean at all times because germs in the mouth can travel to the sinus cavities.
  • If you have a cold, seek treatment promptly and do not let it become chronic.
  • Keep your living area clean from dust and pet hair.

Things to avoid

  • Avoid sleep deprivation and contact with people who have a cold.
  • Avoid inhaling polluted air. Wear a mask covering your mouth and nose tightly if you must be in places with poor air quality or heavy dust, such as underground parking lots, homes, or temples with incense smoke or mosquito coil smoke, as smoke can cause nasal tissue to swell more.
  • Avoid staying in unclean air-conditioned rooms or places with cold and dry air for long periods, including sudden temperature changes, such as moving from a hot environment into a very cold air-conditioned room.
  • Avoid smoking or being near smokers, as this can irritate the nasal and sinus tissues more than usual.
  • Avoid swimming or playing in water parks and getting sprayed by rain droplets.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol, as it can cause nasal tissue swelling.
