Breast biopsy using a needle

What is a breast biopsy using a needle?

Mammography is an excellent method for detecting breast abnormalities. In cases where breast abnormalities are found, it is necessary to perform a biopsy for pathological examination to confirm whether the area is cancerous or not. This method uses an automatic needle biopsy combined with a vacuum-assisted biopsy system that can suction tissue

from the surrounding area at 360 degrees by piercing through the skin to the suspected area, along with special X-ray imaging and computer position calculation for accuracy to ensure complete tissue removal.

When is this method used?

  • There is a suspicious small lump that cannot be felt or there is a cluster of small calcifications
  • The shape or structure of the breast has changed
  • A suspicious lump or calcification is found in the same area after surgery has been performed

What equipment is used?

Phyathai Hospital has breast biopsy machines for both prone and sitting positions. In the prone position, the patient lies face down on the bed, allowing the breast to hang down into an opening, with an automatic needle and vacuum-assisted biopsy device (Suros Machine) located under the bed base. Alternatively, the sitting position involves the patient sitting on a chair with the vacuum-assisted biopsy device similarly positioned. Both methods use a breast compression platform during the biopsy to prevent displacement of the target area, ensuring accurate tissue sampling.
